Concentric Cinema’s Creator & Content Writer

Hi, I’m Jonathan, the creative mind behind Concentric Cinema. As a child growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, I cut my teeth on local creature feature weekend broadcasts on New York stations like WORTV channel 9 and WPIX channel 11. I couldn't get enough of the giant monster movies that emerged from Japan in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. I recall fondly scanning the local TV listings to find that I would be mesmerized once again by the likes of Godzilla, Rodan, Gamera, Mothra and many, many more rubber-suited monsters. I also consumed my share of horror from the iconic studios Hammer and Universal, kung fu flix from Hong Kong, the awe-inspiring creations of Harryhausen, atomic-laced sci fi movies of the 1950, and of course the original Star Trek series. My wheelhouse continued to expand in my teen and adult years to include many horror sub-genres, neo-noir/crime thrillers, exploitation films, and beyond.

A Note About Monster Kids

There are no two ways about it: I am a dyed-in-the-wool Monster Kid. For the uninitiated, monster kids are enthusiasts of classic science fiction, horror, and (of course) monster cinema and television. Fans of a certain age grew up watching these films at the movie house, at the drive in, or on their television sets in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. However, there is also a younger generation of monster kids eagerly seeking out and enjoying this content for the first time—it is indeed an exciting time!

Me at around six years old, playing with a favorite toy robot.

WORTV Channel 9’s Thanksgiving Special was a staple of my formative monster kid years.

Meet Yassmeen: a horror film enthusiast and all-around genre film inductee who is increasingly willing to go down cinematic rabbit holes. Her earliest horror film memories include renting the British B movie Dolls because the lady behind the counter said it was terrifying (it is not) and watching Gremlins with her sister. An avid reader of mostly sad and heavy things, she divides her time between her full-time job as a higher ed administrator, her other full-time job as a mother to an impossibly awesome kid, and collapsing on the couch at 7pm sharp every night. Oh, and she watches plenty of genre films with the guy who made this website.
