MoMI Celebrates Fright Night at 40

To all our New York area cinephiles and devotees’ of 1980s horror: MoMI is back at it with another genre film must-see. This Friday, catch a screening of Fright Night (1985) in 35mm to celebrate the film’s 40th Anniversary.

We are big fans of this horror classic (yeah we said it!) starring Chris Sarandon as the suave and sarcastic blood sucker Jerry Dandridge and the incomparable Roddy McDowall as the “great vampire killer” and horror host Peter Vincent. Fright Night features some good scares, meta sensibilities, no small bit of charm and humor, wonderful (pre-CGI) practical effects, and nods to other classic monster movies to scratch your nostalgia itch. We could continue gushing about this movie, but we’ve already done that in a previous post devoted to the film—check it out here!

Fright Night is being featured as part of MoMI’s ongoing (and inspired) Disreputable Cinema (DC) series, which is organized by guest curator Jesse Berberich. Berberich has been curating an eclectic collection of movies for the last few years, including horror and sci-fi films, grind house and cult movies, underground/boundary stretching films, and some beloved genre classics. I have attended a handful of these screenings, including ones for Dario Argento’s giallo classic Deep Red (1975) and the seminal 1950s creature feature The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953). The series is fun, light-hearted, and truly made for genre film devotees like yours truly.
